The High Line


During our first week in New York we did some very basic exploring - and found some wonderful new things. One of them was the High Line, which was New York's first and only railway track for a very long time. It was used mainly to transport cargo across the island of Manhattan - cargo which came across from Philadelphia by train, then onto a ferry and finally onto this very train line.

Most interestingly, it runs at a diagonal - crossing over many of New York's grid roads - showing just how old it is. Obviously with the introduction of the subway lines and more advanced forms of transport the railway fell into disuse and was going to be demolished. That is, until a bunch of New York conservationists came along and suggested that it be turned into a park instead. And that's exactly what they did.

It is now an incredible high-rise park, that runs for blocks and blocks through New York City. This was our visit:
